Abstract
This two-year study examined the challenges identified by urban Aboriginal families of
children with physical disabilities and determined practical solutions for policy makers
and service providers to help eliminate or overcome these obstacles. The study has
been coordinated by National Association of Friendship Centres, Ottawa and funded
through the Social Development Partnership Program – Office for Disability Issues
of the Government of Canada. Interviews were conducted with Aboriginal parents of
children with disabilities and service providers in the social and health services across
Canada. The study concentrated on Regina but site visits and interviews were conducted
in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Telephone interviews were completed with
participants in Halifax. These site visits were very enlightening. Although, most of the
issues are common across the country, there are significant issues and unique concerns
in some locations.

The 12 minute DVD was developed by youth for youth to share information about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD refers to the spectrum of conditions that affect a baby when its mother drinks while pregnant. The DVD is suitable for audiences aged 12 and up. It features messages from a doctor, nurse, Elder, a mother with children affected by FASD, and several youth. It also features a true-to-life drama about Susan, a young woman who finds out she is pregnant. The Facilitator’s Toolkit contains all of the tools needed to host a one or two hour FASD information session for youth, including facilitator instructions, presentation and summary slides, presentation notes, an agenda, and a workshop evaluation form. An outline for a train-the-trainer workshop is also included.

Children with severe impairment of speech present substantial challenges in assessment and intervention. This audio self-study presents guidelines for developing a diagnostic protocol that includes representative speech sampling, independent and relational analysis procedures for segmental, phonotactic, and suprasegmental components of speech, and symptomatology to aid in differential diagnosis of children with severe speech impairment (with and without developmental apraxia of speech). Guidelines are also provided for selecting appropriate segmental, phonotactic, and suprasegmental goals, along with a review of principles and techniques of intervention. Attention is paid to issues that arise when clinicians assess and treat children being raised in a multilingual environment.

Teaching touch is designed to help a parent or teacher encourage a 4-6 year old child to explore tactile graphics and begin to understand the link between the raised images and real objects. The goal is to promote tactile and verbal skills in ways that are enjoyable and motivating for children. These skills include tracking, searching, verbally describing tactile pictures, using symbols, and other components of effective reading of tactile graphics. Materials examine understanding the child's point of view, building a store of mental imagery, specific teaching activities, and skills contributing to effective use of tactile graphics.
The kit consists of the print edition of the "Teaching Touch" and "Moving on to Pages" booklets and 17 tactile graphic "busy sheets" with recommended activities.

The Program has been designed for children with visual impairments, ages birth to eight years old, and the parents, families and professionals who care for them. It is equally valuable to older children with multiple disabilities, as well as to adults with visual impairments for use with sighted children.
Notes
The Perkins Panda Early Literacy Program consists of three packets, each containing a storybook, cassette and activity guide that are designed to support each other but also to stand alone:
Storybooks: Large print, uncontracted braille, and high-contrast illustrations. Belly Button is a tactile board book. Renowned musician and storyteller Odds Bodkin created the character Perkins Panda and wrote all the storybooks in collaboration with Perkins School for the Blind's Early Literacy Program Committee.
Cassettes: Songs and new stories to complement the storybooks. Written and performed by Odds Bodkin.
Activity guides: Suggested hands-on activities and songs that support each packet’s learning goals. Each has four sections: songs, daily activities, play and stories.
Families may view in SHERC if interested in purchasing their own.
