Abstract
This volume is designed to help pediatric health professionals gain a true understanding of childhood pain. Pain is the most common reason for children to seek a medical consultation and sometimes is the most common reason for avoiding it. Unaddressed fears and anxiety complicate pain management and recovery. This book comprehensively examines children's fears and anxieties that accompany their need for pain relief, and gives the professional the communication skills and words that can help calm these fears. This book is addressed to all disciplines, and is organized into three parts: Part I explores the scientific understanding of pain as a part of children s development; Part II explores pain treatments themselves, their efficacies and how to combine them for therapeutic impact; and Part III uses this understanding to help translate knowledge into clinical practice in three major arenas of pediatric health care and the general practice setting: the physicians office, the dentist's office, and in the hospital.

Abstract
Chad is mesmerized by trains. Mikki’s passion is washers and dryers. And for Derek, life is a game show, where he is the host and anyone within listening range is a contestant. While these boys might seem like any other children, their intense obsessions are early symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome. In this program, ABC News correspondent Jay Schadler reports on that neurological disorder, which makes normal interactions with peers virtually impossible. Studies conducted by Yale University’s Fred Volkmar shed light on both the compulsive fixations and the difficulties in comprehending facial expressions that characterize Asperger’s patients.

Abstract
Children with severe impairment of speech present substantial challenges in assessment and intervention. This audio self-study presents guidelines for developing a diagnostic protocol that includes representative speech sampling, independent and relational analysis procedures for segmental, phonotactic, and suprasegmental components of speech, and symptomatology to aid in differential diagnosis of children with severe speech impairment (with and without developmental apraxia of speech). Guidelines are also provided for selecting appropriate segmental, phonotactic, and suprasegmental goals, along with a review of principles and techniques of intervention. Attention is paid to issues that arise when clinicians assess and treat children being raised in a multilingual environment.

Abstract
Klane tells the story of Evan through recollections begun at about the time of Evan's tenth birthday—a miracle birthday if ever there was one. She records their life in and out of hospitals, doctor's offices, life-threatening emergencies, treatments, home healthcare, school, all from the moment of Evan's birth. We learn what it is like to be the parent of an exceptional child, as much as we learn what life is like for the child. To help illustrate the life of this family, their experiences, and emotions, Klane has included poems and drawings she created over the years, which have been sprinkled throughout the book, as well as family photographs. All of these are a touching reminder that this family is real and that the issues they face every day are huge. Too, this is as much a how-to book as it is the story of one family. There are chapters included on being an effective team player, taking care of yourself as a parent, learning to trust your own instincts, and how to stand up for yourself and your child when you in disagreement with the professionals. A glossary is included, as well as a medical timeline, which is a bit of a capsulation of the events Evan experienced during each year of his life to date.

Abstract
This curriculum for children from birth to 3 years with mild to severe disabilities links assessment and intervention. The book begins by describing the approach and principles of CCITSN and how to use the curriculum. The book outlines 24 teaching sequences, which are clustered into five areas: cognition, communication, social/adaptation, fine motor, and gross motor. Every sequence is introduced with a short description and special adaptations for children with motor, vision, or hearing impairments. Each curricular item or behavior within a sequence includes a materials list, a procedure and functional activities for teaching the skill, and the criteria for successful mastery. This new edition extends the age range from birth to 24 months to birth to 36 months. The curriculum can also be used with older children who fall within this age range developmentally. This volume overlaps with the second edition of The Carolina Curriculum for Preschoolers with Special Needs. This edition has more emphasis on home environment, play and emergent literacy. The appendix describing common conditions is also new to this volume.
