Each skill is formatted sequentially, similar to a cartoon strip, with digital pictures of actual children combined with text and cartoon bubbles to denote what the children are saying - and sometimes thinking - as they engage in the skill. Included are the right (and sometimes the wrong) way to act with accompanying text that enhances the learning experience. These pictures provide a means to compensate for the inherent difficulties many autistic individuals share. They make explicit what to do and say in social situations. In addition, by utilizing a picture format, they capitalize on students' visual processing strengths to facilitate attention and comprehension.

For the child, play provides a prime medium for positive interaction with the surrounding world and the discovery of pleasure. A book that aims at proving that training preschoolers with flash cards and attempting to hurry intellectual development doesn't pay off. In fact, the authors claim, kids who are pressured early on to join the academic rat race don't fair any better than children who are allowed to take their time. Alarmed by the current trend toward creating baby Einsteins, the book urges parents to step back and practice the "Three R's: Reflect, Resist, and Recenter." Instead of pushing preschoolers into academically oriented programs that focus on early achievement, the authors suggest that children learn best through simple playtime, which enhances problem solving skills, attention span, social development and creativity. The authors walk parents through much of the recent research on the way children learn, debunking such myths as the Mozart effect, and pointing out that much learning unravels naturally, programmed through centuries of evolution.
