Abstract
Two families talk openly and frankly about the effects of their child’s brain injury over time. Darnell was injured as a teenager in a motor vehicle crash and is now living at home and attending college. Narrated by his parents and sister, they talk honestly about their emotional trauma early after the injury, the process of grieving, his recovery and their struggle to accept this different person who is their son and brother. Ariel’s family has a different experience as their daughter was injured when 17 months old. Now a teenager, her story illustrates the developmental impact of an injury during childhood. Her parents and sister talk about the grieving process, the effects on their marriage, and their fears and hopes for the future.
