Abstract

Abstract
Jamie is so excited for the first day of school. As he puts on a pink shirt, he thinks about making new friends and learning new things. But when Jamie enters the classroom, everything suddenly changes. When a boy laughs at Jamie's pink shirt and calls him gay, Jamie is mortified. Still, he goes home without telling his parents, determined to never wear that shirt again. The next day, Jamie begins playing with a doll in the classroom. Soon, all the boys are laughing at him again. Jamie knows he should probably tell a teacher, but instead he decides not to play with dolls. Jamie just wants to fit in, but as he tries to change himself to be accepted, he grows more and more unhappy. How will Jamie handle the situation? Can he learn to accept himself and be happy? It's So Gay, and It's Okay is a children's tale that shares an important message: it is okay to be unique and different.

Abstract
A bittersweet graphic novel about a nerdy teenaged boy who falls in love with the cool kid at school.
Adrian isn't very happy these days. He lives in a small town and goes to a Catholic high school. He wears glasses, secretly reads philosophy books, and wishes he had more muscles. He's dogged by a strict mother, bullied by fellow players on the soccer field, and chastised by the school principal, who considers rumors about Adrian being gay as a sign that he is "ill." But Jeremy, the coolest kid at school, thinks otherwise; he takes Adrian on scooter trips, where they end up in Jeremy's secret treehouse stealing kisses. Adrian finds himself falling in love, until Jeremy's girlfriend rats them out, sending Jeremy into a tailspin of embarrassment. What will become of Adrian?
Adrian and the Tree of Secrets is a poignant, beautifully illustrated graphic novel about first love, growing up, and having the courage to be true to yourself.

Abstract
School is just like a film set: there's The Crew, who make things happen, The Extras who fill the empty desks, and The Movie Stars, whom everyone wants tagged in their Facebook photos. But Jude doesn't fit in. He's not part of The Crew because he isn't about to do anything unless it's court-appointed; he's not an Extra because nothing about him is anonymous; and he's not a Movie Star because even though everyone knows his name like an A-lister, he isn't invited to the cool parties. As the director calls action, Jude is the flamer that lights the set on fire.
Before everything turns to ashes from the resulting inferno, Jude drags his best friend Angela off the casting couch and into enough melodrama to incite the paparazzi, all while trying to fend off the haters and win the heart of his favourite co-star Luke Morris. It's a total train wreck!

This book is a beach conversation among three children. One boy asks another boy about having two mommies. A young girl listening in asks some questions too. True to a child's curiosity, practical questions follow. Which mom is there when you want to go fishing? Which mom helps out when Kitty goes missing? To which he answers: Mommy helps when I want to go fishing. Both Mommies help when Kitty goes missing.
This book lets us look inside one non-traditional family, a same sex couple and their son. As the children talk, it's clear this boy lives in a nurturing environment where the biggest issues are the everyday challenges of growing up.

Abstract
Ray Liu knows he should be happy. He lives in a big suburban house with all the latest electronic gadgets, and even finds plenty of time to indulge in his love of gaming. He needs the escape. It?s tough getting grades that will please his army veteran father, when speaking English is still a struggle. And he can?t quite connect with his peers at high school -- Chinese immigrants like himself but who seem to have adjusted to North American life more easily.
Then comes the fateful day when his father accesses Ray?s internet account, and discovers Ray has been cruising gay websites. Before Ray knows what has hit him, his belongings have been thrown on the front lawn, and he has been kicked out.
Angry, defiant, Ray heads to downtown Toronto. In short order he is robbed, beaten up and seduced, and he learns the hard realities of life on the street. Could he really sell himself for sex? Lots of people use their bodies to make money -- athletes, actors, models, pop singers. If no one gets hurt, why should anyone care?

Abstract
Bullying in schools has garnered significant attention recently, but little has been said about the bullying of homosexuals and transexual students in Canadian high schools. This book fills that gap by exploring the experiences of youth who identify or are identified as "queer." Based on interviews with recent high school graduates in British Columbia, these researchers provide stories of physical, verbal, and emotional harassment in this group and offer insights into the negative outcomes that result from the experience of being bullied. On the other hand, however, these young people were not helpless victims: many learned to rely on resistance, inner strength, and true friends. In the last chapter, the authors make recommendations for handling homophobic and transphobic bullying in high schools and supporting students who experience this form of harassment.

Abstract
Everybody needs friends - especially a boy in a dress!
Dennis' life is boring and lonely. His mother left two years ago, his truck driver father is depressed, his brother is a bully and, worst of all, no hugging is one of their household rules. But one thing Dennis does have is soccer. He's the leading scorer on his team. Oh, and did we mention his secret passion for fashion?
When Dennis' friend Lisa discovers his stash of Vogue magazines, she convinces him to vamp it up and wear a dress to school. But in class, his hilarious hijinks as "Denise" are brought to a screeching halt when the headmaster discovers his secret and delivers the worst punishment of all -Dennis is expelled from school and therefore forbidden to play in the soccer Final Cup!
Can the team win the most important game of the year without their star player? And, more importantly, will Dennis gain the love and respect of his friends and family, even in a dress?

Abstract
Although life for Amrith in 1980 Sri Lanka seems rather uneventful and orderly, things change in a hurry when his male cousin arrives from Canada and Amrith finds himself completely enamored with his new visitor. The setting is Sri Lanka, 1980, and it is the season of monsoons. Fourteen-year-old Amrith is caught up in the life of the cheerful, well-to-do household in which he is being raised by his vibrant Auntie Bundle and kindly Uncle Lucky. He tries not to think of his life before, when his doting mother was still alive. Amrith's holiday plans seem unpromising: he wants to appear in his school's production of Othello and he is learning to type at Uncle Lucky's tropical fish business. Then, like an unexpected monsoon, his cousin arrives from Canada and Amrith's ordered life is storm-tossed. He finds himself falling in love with the Canadian boy. Othello, with its powerful theme of disastrous jealousy, is the backdrop to the drama in which Amrith finds himself immersed.

Abstract
This DVD addresses name-calling, homophobia and stereotyping. Designed for Grades 4-8, it is intended to start discussion to teach children about the negative effects of certain words and bullying behaviour. In the video, children's paintings magically transform into two animated adventures of Anta, Habib and Jeroux as they deal with homophobia and bullying at school. Woven into these short animated stories are film clips of an actual class discussion between an equity educator and elementary school students. In a lively talk about why names are bad and hurtful, stereotypes about gays and lesbians are dismantled and new views are put into place by the children themselves. Young viewers are challenged to think about their responses to people and families different from their own.

Abstract
Errol and his teddy, Thomas, are best friends who do everything together. Whether it's riding a bike, playing in the tree house, having a tea party, or all of the above, every day holds something fun to do.
One sunny day, Errol finds that Thomas is sad, even when they are playing in their favorite ways. Errol can't figure out why, until Thomas finally tells Errol what the teddy has been afraid to say: "In my heart, I've always known that I'm a girl teddy, not a boy teddy. I wish my name was Tilly, not Thomas." And Errol says, "I don't care if you're a girl teddy or a boy teddy! What matters is that you are my friend."
Introducing Teddy introduces the youngest readers to understanding gender identity and transition in an accessible and heart-warming story about being true to yourself and being a good friend.

Abstract
The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream Pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.
What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program?or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan?or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Inspired by the author's son, and by her own initial struggles to understand, this is a heart-warming book about unconditional love and one remarkable family. It is also a call for tolerance and an end to bullying and judgments. The world is a brighter place when we accept everyone for who they are.

Abstract
In this picture-book biography, she introduces stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst, whose astonishing secret was revealed after death: Hold your horses / Huge surprise . . . / He's a woman in disguise. Rhyming couplets follow Parkhurst from orphaned stableboy to Old West legend, known for coarse behavior and consummate driving skill. The pace is sometimes jarring, but Kay admirably distills the facts with the fewest possible words. Young people will quickly understand the unusual freedoms Charley enjoyed, in contrast to those of other women: They were bound by / Petticoats. / Couldn't drive or / Cast their votes. Realistic, oil paintings evoke the period and create a strong character in rough, formidable Charley.

Abstract
Charlotte Parkhurst, known as Charley, spent most of her life masquerading as a man. Raised in an orphanage where she is the only girl, she is prevented from being adopted by the staff, who put her to work in the kitchen. The author provides a compact and exciting story about real people who exemplify traits that readers admire. A concluding note tells more about the historical facts surrounding Parkhurst's life, but kids will read it just for the adventure. The full-page, black-and-white pencil drawings are well rendered and enhance the straightforward text.
